About Martin Rosenthal
Born in Woburn, Mass. in 1899, Martin completed military service in 1925 and began his studies at the Arts Students League. Little is known about his early years and he didn’t exhibit much from the 1930’s - 1960’s but he did continue to paint. He spent the greater part of his life near New York City, but traveled to Madagascar and Spain, and lived in Japan briefly. When he was in NY, he lived with his mom and painted in the basement often in the dark.
It wasn’t until sometime in the late 60’s that he reappeared with strange and fantastic creatures crowding the canvas. They are repeated over the years throughout much of his works. ‘Piece Apart’ is a deconstruction of his fantastical creatures with references to stained glass.
